Anne Fontenoy was encouraged to be creative in art, needlework and embroidery from an early age, at home and at school, although she has an academic nature too.  She trained in commercial art and couture studios in London in an era when most studio work was done by hand.  She started her own professional practice in 1981 creating hand sewn dresses from her patterns, mostly using silk and natural fibres, developing drawing and hand cut stencil work for cards and pictures at the same time.

Drawing plants and flowers from nature and using natural materials, in particular paper and pencils, are fundamental to her visual art. She also uses inks and mixed media and created a Digital Art Collection as a result of needing to use computers for admin in her practice.

She is fascinated by the workings of the human mind and of meditative practices, so some of her works are contemplative, or reflect on thoughts and inner concepts,

Because she designs surface decoration for apparel, her work sometimes includes patterns and her work as a card maker means that she illustrates for seasonal celebrations as well as for her love of flowers.
