Revolving and Evolving
£2,150
Dominic Hopkinson uses traditional materials and techniques to define a set of mathematical rules or parameters, that become a process, guiding the final outcome. All the work is handmade, eschewing the use of contemporary fabrication methods, such as laser cutting and 3d printing. Dominic has to rely on his haptic skills and the mathematical rules to generate form that, despite being abstract in every sense, also has the ability to engage and interest the viewer. He believes this engagement is an act of self-recognition which occurs because mathematics is the fundamental basis for the creation of structure in nature.
Dominic Hopkinson lives and works in Leeds and exhibits widely across the UK and showed work at the 2018 Venice Architecture Biennale. He is currently visiting Artist in Residence at the School of Mathematics, University of Leeds.
