John Richard Hewitt is a portrait artist from Exeter, UK and has lived in the USA, Costa Rica and Jordan. He has worked in diverse fields from flamenco guitar concerts to animal rescue and studying classical Arabic in the Middle east. He now lives and works in Watford. His art journey has included periods of cubism as well as a fascination with iconography.
“I have to paint what I feel and that expresses itself through commissioned portraits, sacred portraits as well as portraits from imagination and those few paintings based on famous works; but there always has to be an ‘edge’ meaning that they have a powerful, often unseen but always felt, quality of a deeper shade of the spectrum.”
His portraits attempt to reveal this ‘edge’ as you peek behind the surface smiles to get closer to how someone actually feels.
